Management Team

John Stalcup, Ph.D. Chief Executive Officer, Board Member

Dr. Stalcup has 25 years experience as medical education publisher, author, manager, administrator, and biomedical device entrepreneur. He was Provost, Professor of Interdisciplinary Science, Science & Technology Transfer Officer, and member of the Board of Directors of the Universitiy of Northern California. Dr. Stalcup is also co-inventor of the patent-pending process and device entitled “Bone Cement Composite Containing particles in a Non-uniform Spatial Distribution” developed at the Science & Technology Innovation Center of UNC. Dr. Stalcup holds a B.S. in Psychology from Bradley University and a Ph.D. from Washington University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences with a specialization in health care education and research.

Y. King Liu, Ph.D. Chief Science Officer, Board Member

Dr. Liu has more than 40 years of experience in academic research, clinical practice and biomedical engineering device development. Dr. Liu is the lead inventor of the patent-pending process and device entitled “Bone Cement Composite Containing Particles in a Non-uniform Spatial Distribution”. Dr. Liu served on the faculties of the University of Michigan, Tulane University School of Medicine, and University of Iowa, and is currently the founder, president, and chairman of the board of the University of Northern California (UNC). Dr. Liu had a sabbatical-year visiting professorships at Stanford University; the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden; Oxford University, U.K.; and UC-SF. He has received honors ranging from the NIH Research Career Development Award to Advisor-at-Large for the Committee on Hearing, Acoustics, and Biomechanics (CHABA) of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences.

Michael T. Lyster, M.D. Chief Medical Officer, Board Member

Dr. Lyster graduated from the University of Illinois School of Medicine in 1987, and completed training in Internal Medicine in 1990, and postgraduate fellowship training in Hematology/Oncology at Northwestern in 1993. Dr. Lyster is in clinical practice with Hematology Oncology Associates of Illinois. He is both manager and Director of Development for HOAI, the largest specialty practice of its kind in Illinois. Dr. Lyster was board certified in Internal Medicine in 1990, and Oncology and Hematology respectively in 1993 and 1996. He is the author of several articles in the peer-reviewed medical literature in oncology, including liver-directed interventional therapy for metastatic disease.

James D. Bielenberg, CPA Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Bielenberg is a California licensed CPA with over 30 years of public accounting and industry experience. His “Big 4” public accounting experience included working with early stage technology and manufacturing companies in Arthur Young’s (now known as Ernst & Young) Entrepreneurial Services Group. Since 1986, Mr. Bielenberg has held various Senior Executive positions for industry leading, privately-held concerns. A graduate of Golden Gate University (San Francisco, CA), Mr. Bielenberg is also a published author, course developer and lecturer in Sonoma State University’s MBA program. He is Chairman of Sonoma County’s Economic Development Board and past Board member of various organizations in the community.

Gerard von Hoffmann, Esq. Patent Attorney, Board Member

Mr. von Hoffmann is a partner at the law firm of Knobbe, Martens, Olson & Bear, LLP, where he specializes in intellectual property strategies for early stage medical device companies.   Mr. von Hoffmann holds an A.B. in Chemistry from Rice University and Occidental College and received a J.D., cum laude, from the University of San Diego School of Law. Mr. von Hoffmann attended the Institute on International and Comparative Law at Oxford University, England, and served as a law clerk for the Honorable Helen W. Nies, Circuit Judge, United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.  Mr. von Hoffmann has served as an Adjunct Professor of Patent Law at the University of San Diego School of Law, and also served on the boards of several private and public medical device companies.
